MarkBook®/LogiNotesMD 2009/2010

ASI's Faculty of Education Program

On an annual basis, we supply the current edition of MarkBook/LogiNotes to participating Faculties of Education free of charge. Professors of Education and all pre-service candidates may install MarkBook/LogiNotes on university computers and on their personal machines. A license for the MarkBook/LogiNotes RubricBuilder is included. The candidates may use the software during their training year and while on practicum placements. However, they may not give copies to associates or others outside the university.

A number of different MarkBook/LogiNotes programs are run at participating Universities as described below.

WHAT IS MarkBook®/LogiNotesMD?

MarkBook/LogiNotes is Class Management Software for teachers. It strongly promotes the central objective of education: student growth. MarkBook/LogiNotes works for teachers, students, administrators and parents in seven ways to make that growth happen. If not familiar with MarkBook/LogiNotes, and why teachers like to use it, please see the bottom section of the following web page:

MarkBook/LogiNotes is highly prized by pre-service candidates for another reason - it's a tool that they can put to use as soon as they get hired. Most have good computer skills and MarkBook/LogiNotes provides an opportunity to demonstrate those skills.

HOW IS MarkBook®/LogiNotesMD USED AT FACULTIES OF EDUCATION?

We will deliver CD copies of the current edition of MarkBook/LogiNotes upon request. This can be well in advance of the start of the academic year or part way through the year. If your institution provides computer images or software CD bundles, it would be a good idea to get the new annual edition as early as possible to include MarkBook/LogiNotes in the preparation and distribution of these items. The northern hemisphere edition of MarkBook/LogiNotes, for schools starting in Aug or Sep, is available in May. The southern hemisphere edition (MarkBook CY edition), for schools starting in January, is available in September.

As Faculties of Education become increasingly familiar and confident with the software, the following progression typically takes place:

Level 1: After receiving the software, volunteer or selected students are assigned the project of investigating MarkBook/LogiNotes and reporting back on its capabilities. Most pre-service candidates will visit this web site to download appropriate materials such as the sample printouts, the .pdf manual, and other items. They will typically try the software and play with the sample classes. With minimal trial-and-error learning, they discover some of MarkBook's/LogiNotes's features, and deliver a high approval rating.

Level 2: MarkBook/LogiNotes is made available to all candidates who wish to install it and try it.

Level 3: The faculty provides formal instruction on how to use MarkBook/LogiNotes - typically one or two lessons. Students are assigned the task of modeling how a teacher would use MarkBook/LogiNotes. They're asked to create a class with ten fake students, create categories, enter data for ten assessments, and then generate an HTML Class Report from MarkBook/LogiNotes. This report is submitted to the instructor as an attachment to Email. Or, a paper Class Report is submitted.

Level 4: MarkBook/LogiNotes becomes the model for instruction on good Assessment and Evaluation practices. Given that the software has eleven separate algorithms for calculation of central tendency, has numerous analytical tools and creates rubrics, some Faculties now teach an A&E course with MarkBook/LogiNotes as the model.

Level 5: The Faculty provides certification that students have become 'MarkBook/LogiNotes literate'. Candidates use the document during job interviews.

Level 6: Asylum Software Inc. provides lectures on the Assessment & Evaluation processes and/or software instruction to candidates during their training year. The lecture re-enforces many of the concepts taught by the Faculty and gives the candidates useful and light-hearted tips on surviving as a teacher and making students grow well.
